Review of Macbeth (2015) by Quandoquidem Q — 19 Jan 2016
Just seen this in the cinema (rural area - takes a long time to arrive). I don't understand the rave reviews. I've known this play since I was child - I'm Scots - and this is ' a film directed by an idiot, full of sound and fury - signifying nothing'.
It is a tragedy of lighting and effects over character and the essence of the tale - much of it lost by unnecessary reinterpretation of the play. The principal characters are not mesmerizing. Anyone who thinks they are is mistaking the need to concentrate so hard on what they are saying - working out what the mumbles and mutters mean - and the feeling of being hypnotized with incipient catatonia.
Fassbaender's performance is wooden and the multiple opportunities to bring to the fore triumphs of language are lost. Seen better - a lot better.
