Review of M (1931) by Ola S — 19 Sep 2009
"Will nicht, muss! Will nicht, muss!" No bad guy on screen has been performed in the way Peter Lorre does it here. It's Berlin 1931, the year the film was made, and you can feel a dark shadow over the backyards, over the children playing and over the workers' apartments in this proletarian Metropolis. Lorre sex-murders children. He doesn't want to, but he must. You've hardly seen such a sweet little man and such a dreadful monster.
Much of the credit also goes to Otto Wernicke as the police captain. But suddenly they come out of the sewers, the ordinary criminals. They want Lorre and they get him. But in the end, you feel compassion through all your hate and disgust, while darkness puts it evil wings around this place we know as Berlin. There's a future coming.
