This is one of the best music bopics I have ever seen and is up there with the superb Walk the Line. There are 3 stand out performances from Paul Dano and John Cusack as Brian Wilson and Paul Giamatti as the psychopathic and controlling Eugene Landy.
Although I'm familiar with the music I knew very little else about the band and the life of Brian Wilson. It's frightening what Brian Wilson went through, as his mental health deteriorated it was made worse by the control Eugene Landy, his 'legal guardian' held over him for many years.
It's in these scenes that Paul Giamatti and John Cusack shine, both perfectly cast, Giamatti as a manipulative psycho and Cusack as vulnerable and submissive to a man who he believes has his best interests at heart.
The best film John Cusack has been in for quite some time.
