Review of L'Avventura (1960) by Paul B — 28 Aug 2009
One of those so-called masterpieces which in all honesty are overrated. Antonioni's film does contain some great cinematography of the Sicilian coast and countryside, the imagery being it's main strength.
As a narrative it's a bit of a Picnic at Hanging Rock-style enigma: a group of high society play boys and girls take a boat trip to a mountain island, one of the girls mysteriously disappears and her boyfriend pursues a romance with her best friend whilst attempting to track her down.
Apparently aiming for structure closer to a rich novel, Antonionis characters are so glacial and unlikable that I felt no engagement besides the sheer look and atmosphere of parts mof the film.
