Review of L'Avventura (1960) by Joe L — 05 Jul 2010
As with 'blow-up,' antonioni presents us with another sexually detached, 'mystery' that possibly is no mystery at all. it is the story of beautiful rich people so bored in their lives that there's nothing to do but invent problems - and so we can't help but wonder if the central crisis of the film is merely an invention of its characters.
after rewatching the first act, I firmly believe this to be the case. I was reminded of 'psycho' in the way the film abandons its star after the first act and then shifts its attention to the stunning monica vitti.
it's an intriguing character study of people who at first respond to crisis exactly as you'd expect, then begin a sequential decline towards outrageously immoral behavior. would make a great double feature with 'mulholland drive.
