Review of L'Avventura (1960) by Simon T — 20 Jun 2016
An endurance test. As so often with Antonioni, disappearance and identity feature heavily and meaning is left to the viewer. The story - a young woman going missing on an Italian island - is simply the means for Antonioni to manoeuvre his blank passionless mannequins (yes, even the luminously beautiful Monica Vitti) across his chessboard.
Not nearly as interesting as his Jack Nicholson masterpiece, The Passenger.
