Review of Laid to Rest (2009) by Al M — 15 Dec 2009
As a slasher film, Laid to Rest does two things right: 1.) tt has a creepy killer with his metallic mask and the camera on his shoulder that films his victims' deaths and 2.) it features extremely brutal death scenes that will not disappoint even the most hardened slasher/gore afficiandos.
But it does so much more wrong. First off, it looks terrible. It must be shot on video because it looks like crap. A brief message for aspiring filmmakers: video may be cheaper, but it makes some of us think the film looks overly amateurish.
For some reason, video always makes everything look even faker to me. Secondly, the acting is atrocious even for a slasher film. The scenes in which the characters interact with one another are almost unbearably awful.
Still, Laid to Rest knows how to choreograph a killshot, how to create provocative and disturbing scenarios, and how to bring in legitimate twists. A decent film that could have been a true classic.
