Review of Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky (2009) by Ola S — 04 Jan 2010
No, there are no proofs about Chanel and Stravinsky ever having a love affair, but never mind.
It all starts with one of the greatest scandals in theatre history. The first performance of "Rite of Spring" in Paris. Stravinsky's music can 't be heard for all the boos. His fans yell "upperclass pigs" to the booers. It must have been a quite funny evening and the reconstruction of the performance is well done by director Jan Kounen.
A couple of years later, Coco, who attended that Paris circus, invites Srravinsky and his family to live with her. Then another drama begins, since they become lovers. Coco is a people collector without conscience. It's not clear whether Stravinsky wants to be collected, but he surely is.
What comes between them is not his wife, but merely his musical integrity. Mads Mikkelsen (Stravinsky) is unable to destroy anything he touches. Anna Mouglalis (Coco) makes more of a routine portrait.
OK, better than I thought.
