Review of Force Majeure (2014) by Ola S — 22 Aug 2014
This one got Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Festival and one can understand why. It's about the family, which the father now spends five days of "quality time" with. Another word for putting career before children.
Anyway, there's this avalanche at the Alp Hotel and the father doesn't save his children, He saves his iPod and ski gloves instead. This means family crisis, to say the least.
Director Ruben Östlund is splendid in telling feelings from body language and often you understand more from that, than from the words. This film has a rhythm of its own. It's very far from the script factories. There are sometimes long takes, sometimes traditional cuts, but it's most of the time impossible to be sure of the next line.
Also great acting and expecially by Norwegian Lisa Loven Kongsli. A movie to strongly recommend.
