Review of Hour of the Wolf (1968) by John B — 16 Aug 2008
Ingmar Bergman ventured into the horror film genre, but only loosely, with this examination of an artist's descent into madness. A disturbing watch, but not a gore fest. Bergman regulars Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann deliver amazing performances.
Like Takashi Miike's "Audition," this is all a slow build up to the final act, where Sydow's character reaches the edge of sanity and takes a flying leap off from it. The film holds itself up next to Bergman's better known films "The Seventh Seal" and "Wild Strawberries.
" If you are looking for an introduction to Bergman, this is an easy one to grasp. A beautiful and haunting film that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
