Review of Hour of the Wolf (1968) by Ross M — 15 Sep 2011
Ingmar Bergman is not a household name unless you have a film geek living in the house, therefore most people probably wouldn't have any idea who he was. I offer up "Hour of the Wolf" as a more accessable entry into the world of art film.
Telling the story of an artist slowly going mad from his past, and his supportive wife who discovers his strange afflictions, Hour of the Wolf can be described as a surreal, psychological horror film in the classic form.
Of course the plot summary does little to deal with the themes running through the film, including clash of classes, possible cannibalism, and nature vs nurture. Don't let these things scare you away from the film, as it's a deceptively engaging film, that if given the chance could provide more meaning for the viewer.
Highly recommended.
