Review of Hair (2012) by Alyssa N — 04 Sep 2009
This is a great musical with plenty of catchy and irreverent songs, complete with fun choreography that translated well from the stage, and overall it seems to capture the essence of the 60s counterculture movement quite well.
The first half of the film is so carefree it will make you want to crash a fancy dinner party and dance on tables, but the 60s werenâ??t all fun and games and neither is this film. After the halfway point, the threat of war and death grows stronger with each passing musical number, all leading up to an ending thatâ??s like a huge kick in the gut.
As far as twists go, this is one of the most shocking and resonating Iâ??d experienced in a while. So in spite of some incongruencies and a plot that almost loses itself a couple times, I have to recommend this movie on the strength of its cast, its music, and especially its spirit.
