Review of Waltz with Bashir (2008) by Alyssa N — 10 Oct 2010
As far as I know, no one else has even attempted to make an animated war documentary. It's an interesting choice, to say the least. It makes the movie more accessible than it would be with talking heads, but it also allows people to detach themselves from the reality of the horrors they're seeing, not necessarily a good thing.
This is probably why we're shown a bunch of devastating real-life photographs at the end, which affected me far more than anything else in the movie. But that's certainly not to say I was unmoved during the rest of it.
The animation style is striking, even beautiful, yet there's something dark and gritty about it that suits the subject matter. A couple scenes are also given a surreal, dream-like quality that takes full advantage of the medium.
Ultimately, this is a new and creative way to explore old and thought-provoking questions about war and its aftermath.
