Review of Blood Sucking Freaks (1976) by Alyssa N — 07 Mar 2010
A bloody, grotesque theater show is put on for people's entertainment, but unbeknownst to the audience, the "actos" are real victims. It's the perfect premise for an exploitation film, since it puts the movie in the position of being able to deliver a clever commentary on itself and its viewers in the midst of all the entertaining bloodspatter and nudity.
Instead, this movie is so focused on the latter that it perplexes me why the writers wasted energy giving it a plot at all. At least their energy was well-spent in coming up with all the perversely creative torture scenes, where I couldn't help but admire their twisted ingenuity.
But even those were weakened by the embarrassing acting skills of nearly everyone involved, and obviously the shocking effects in the 70s are dated. Only watch this if you're one of those people who enjoy ridiculously bad movies.
