Review of Gettysburg (1993) by Nick F — 24 Apr 2010
Period detail and endless montages of Civil War combat is nearly undone by some awful ponderous dialogue and an irritatingly bombastic score. Jeff Daniels, Sam Elliot, and Tom Berenger fair the best in their parts, as does Stephan Lang adding dimension to the heavily bearded cast (making it difficult to tell who is who).
Martin Sheen makes a woeful acting decision to play Robert E Lee so softspokenly. The sequence where Chamberlain defends the hill is the stand-out sequence of the film as wave after wave of Alabamians and Texans come after the Union's left-most flank.
The final day of the battle is skewed very much toward the Southern characters, and the battle sequences unfold with little dramatic tension (not helped by the score). With a near 4 hour length, one has to really be in the mood for this picture.
