Vicious, merciless, and incapable of remorse, Jack Carter is a tight-toothed, heavy-shouldered goon looking for his brother's murderers. The plot is not novel, especially not today, but what DOES register as remarkable is Michael Caine's fierce performance and the pseudo-documentary feel that situates us in the middle of the beer and sweat-stained grit of a grimy, ennui-stricken Newcastle.
