Review of Get Carter (1971) by Bob K — 15 Apr 2016
This is the anti-Godfather gangster movie. "Grubby" is the best adjective for the whole thing - the people, places, kills. There is no glamour, everything is grey and weather beaten, including the people, and no one has any honor at all.
Michael Caine is a vicious brute, who stays composed through most of the film, styling himself as a cold but stylish London killer. But his true nasty nature appears repeatedly as he tries to discover how his brother was killed, and he descends to the lowest levels of barbarism.
There's no satisfying final moment of revenge here, nothing so cut-and-dried as a modern film would present it. But there are a lot of Newcastle gangster job openings by the end.
