Review of Gentleman's Agreement (1947) by David L — 02 Oct 2013
The protagonist sometimes absorbs in the role perhaps too much and there should have been some sort of score, but those are only minor flaws in this otherwise stupendous film. The characters development is strong and the acting is superb, but what takes it to the next level is its approach to difficult subject matter which is very refreshing.
Instead of unnecessary tears and melodrama, we get this sophisticated approach with wonderful morality dilemmas and complexities telling us in the process the great truths about prejudice and hypocrisy.
Consequently, Gentleman's Agreement is a deserved Oscar winner with strong and important message and it is sadly a bit forgotten film which is a shame because it clearly is a classic.
