Review of Gentleman's Agreement (1947) by Mike H — 19 Dec 2011
A very honest and powerful post-War story confronting antisemitism and indifference. while I thought it did get a bit preachy in spots, for the most part it was extremely compelling. the break-up scene is easily my favorite.
...it presents a very real challenge to the traditional "cinematic happy ending" and it also brings up some very valid, thought-provoking points about being born the way you are and being glad about it.
it's actually because of this scene I really dislike the ending, because it seems completely contrary to what the events preceding it were leading towards. overall a poignant film that does a terrific job of balancing both a serious issue and the people that have to live and deal with it.
