Review of Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris (1999) by Paul E — 03 Jan 2008
The best giant monster movie to ever come out of Japan, and I include the original Gojira (Godzilla). The special effects are near flawless, the human performances beneficial, the writing and directing well done.
I can't think of an American summer blockbuster in the last 10 years (with the exception of Batman Begins and Lord of the Rings) that put so much genuine thought into its story as this one did. See, this is what happens when you show PROPER respect to your source material.
Gamera is the ultimate anti-hero, and in many ways is portrayed as the actual male lead of the film WITHOUT things becoming goofy. Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin take note: THIS is how you make a monster movie.
