Review of Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris (1999) by Colin R — 06 Aug 2007
My god! The series reaches a paramount with the release of Gamera III! Not only that, but this entry in the Gamera series slaughters the wave of Godzilla movies that were being turned out left and right around the same time with a better story and convincing drama! The Godzilla series would not pick up until Shusuke Kaneko the director of Gamera trilogy would take the directors chair with Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (arguably one of the best out of the later series).
Anyway Gamera III features some of the best giant monster action known to man, and even dabbles with CGI (done almost flawlessly here!!!) in the best Gamera movie known to date! There is drama, ESP, blood, death and an ending that will leave any monster fan speechless.
The series sadly concludes with this mighty epic (although the ending has it left open for a sequel, Daiei unfortunately sold the rights to the series and the follow up Gamera: Little Braves is a disgusting attempt to identify Gamera as the Guardian of Children once again instead of the Universe?) as Gamera acquires a new powerful weapon to battle the unholy Iris.
If you are a giant monster fan, there is no excuse for not checking this movie out already!
