Review of First Man (2018) by Ht W — 14 Oct 2018
I love this genre, Apollo 13 and The Right Stuff are two of my favorites, but First Man kinda stunk. For starters, the camera shakes constantly, everything is so unnecessarily shaky that I was getting motion sickness.
And the film constant uses extreme close ups, where it feels like the camera is only 2 inches from the actor's face. It actually makes the movie unpleasant to watch. But if you get past that, the film is still BORING! Way too much time spent on personal dramas and almost nothing on the actual missions.
The few, short, space related scenes are ruined by awful sound effects. Anytime a rocket or space craft does anything it is accompanied by a set of unrealistic screeching and groaning sound effects that pull you right out the movie.
IT wasn't a bad movie, but definitely not worth the 88% score critics are giving it. Clearly a lot of paid reviews for this film, its score is way too high at 88%. I'm sure it is going to drop as real people start leaving reviews.
