Review of Fear X (2003) by Chaz * — 28 Jun 2007
A dark and brooding psychological thriller, with strong sense of atmosphere that is truly mesmerizing. The plot begins very well, with a complex mystery that draws the audience in and begs for an answer to its puzzling riddle.
Unfortunately, this is where the film drops the ball... there is no answer! The film slowly builds towards a resolution, only for the film to abruptly end and leave the viewer hanging. I normally enjoy ambiguous endings that require us to revisit the film in order to comprehend its meaning, but here there simply isn't anything to comprehend! Indeed, this is a fatal error on the work of the filmmakers.
Yet, I must admit that the film is beautifully directed, with wonderful set design and cinematography, and John Turturro's performance was indeed incredible. Overall, I did enjoy it, but I am greatly disappointed at what could have been.
