Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by Max S — 23 Dec 2007
This is the second Bergman film I have seen and he is fast becoming one of my favorite directors. Watching Fanny and Alexander is like watching a wonderful, perfectly-executed play. We get a true sense of who these people are and feel like we are right there alongside them in their struggles. Bergman's superb writing and directing; the wonderful cinematography and colorful (and sometimes drab) set design; and the excellent actors who bring these characters to life are responsible for making this film a masterpiece.
What I got from the film is that Alexander goes through life and discovers both the good and bad aspects of human behavior. In the end, it is the journey, the "little worlds," we encounter that we remember and appreciate.
