Review of Eyes Wide Shut (1999) by Johannes R — 17 Jan 2011

Kubrick's final masterpiece. It explores the themes of jealousy and sexual fantasy, but also something else, beginning with the first line of the film: "Honey, have you seen my wallet?" A dream-like odyssey of sexual encounters and a man's confrontation with himself. Of course, as Kubrick's film, it looks and sounds as close to perfection as cinema gets. One of Nicole Kidman's best performances. After this, has anyone really made a better film? Or, should I ask, will there ever be a better film?

The marital drama inside the social aspects of the film - it's both psychological and sociological. While we follow "Doctor Bill's" journey, we are also following the larger world around him. The production design, use of colors (especially purple) and various pieces of art create another layer of meaning.
