Review of Drive (2011) by Peter F — 05 Oct 2015
Drive is the type of crime film that only comes around once in a great while: A film that fires from all cylinders and transcends its base as a genre picture (i.e. L.A. Confidential, No Country for Old Men).
Nicolas Winding Refn's involvement as a director (a personal choice of star Ryan Gosling) goes a long way, as his arty style makes this a perpetually beautiful film, even during the scenes of graphic violence.
It's simply amazing how Refn is able to switch the film's tone from introspective to pulpish hip so effortlessly, thanks to a few Lynchian flairs and a pulsing soundtrack. The cast of seasoned actors only heightens the film (who thought Albert Brooks could play a sadistic gangster and be a scene stealer), with Ryan Gosling once again showing that he's become one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood.
An outstanding achievement in film making, and the best American film to come out so far this year.
