Review of Dreams (1990) by Mike J — 29 Oct 2008
This movie blew me away for many reasons. Mainly for how exquisitely Kurosawa captured what dreams are like. Some comments below talk about the "boring parts". I watched and I thought, you know, this is how I *feel* during a dream sometimes - like I've been walking through this blizzard for ever, or lost on this mountainside for what seems like a really long time. It was precisely cut, in my opinion, just long enough to capture the dreamlike state and emotion before moving on. The dreams, as necessary, were surreal (Van Gogh), or all too real (the 3rd company). I'm not sure which my favorite is, but I really enjoyed the first one. It captures awe and wonder, and fear and trembling before the unknown so well - it is a child's dream.
What was more impressive for me, though, was that, even though the dreams contained within them very culturally Japanese elements, they were all dreams I, myself, have had in some very similar ways. They all touch at the primordial stuff that, I think, we all share.
Brilliant.
