Review of Downfall (2004) by Bryce I — 06 Jul 2011
Simply put, this film instantly joins the ranks of films like "Schindler's List", "Saving Private Ryan", and "The Pianist" as one of the great movies focused on the European campaign of WWII.
The twist is that here we are presented with an intimate and sometimes shockingly touching perspective of the Nazi leadership in its final weeks. It explores the monstrosity of Hitler, psychoanalyzes it, and offers a glimmer of his diminished humanity.
I also found fascinating the subtle emphasis on his supposed battle with Parkinson's. With acting this strong and direction this tight, though, 2 1/2 hours flew by for me and I found myself positively entranced from start to finish.
