Review of Downfall (2004) by Afm185 — 21 Jun 2020
As accurate as you’re gonna get with the last days of Hitler (and some time after). It’s not exactly entertaining, but it’s really interesting. I can’t say I was engaged the whole time though. It’s soooooo long and a decent amount is extraneous.
About a third of the movie doesn’t even have Hitler in it. It also follows some of his generals and followers, there’s a lot of his secretary in it, and even a scene or two with random civilians. I’d be fine with some of it but at a certain point I just got tired.
Near the end I was into it again though. The history is stuff we all know but the details are where it becomes more watchable. And the acting is terrific. Especially from the dude who played Hitler. Almost definitely not something I’d rewatch, but I’m glad I saw it.
It deserves a higher score for cinematic merit than my personal enjoyment of it.
