Review of Disco Pigs (2001) by Mandy D — 23 Feb 2012
I watched this film as a recommendation from a friend. I can easily say this was one of the strangest films I have ever encountered. I probably understood only 35% of the dialogue because of the incredibly heavy accents that everyone in the film has.
The film is incredibly over dramatic and full of long monologues and full of disheartening music. What you do understand is that two life-long friends (literally life-long, like straight out of the womb and in hospital cribs there is a close-up of the friends holding hands) are inseparable and cannot leave each other.
They only know lives that have each other in them. They have nicknames for each other of "Pig" (Cillian Murphy) and "Runt" (Elaine Cassidy). Pig begins to see Runt as more than just a friend as he sees how truly beautiful she is and wants to become even more involved in her life which seems almost impossible.
As he becomes increasingly jealous when other men begin to speak with Runt, Pig begins a decline into further insanity than he already had. He uses brutal violence to keep her safe but it only turns Runt away.
In a Romeo and Juliet like ending (with the exception of course that Runt does not actually kill herself), Runt knows she needs to do something and proceeds to suffocate Pig while Pig does nothing to stop her because he would never want to hurt her.
From my sort of plot summary, the film sounds like a tale of love. But trust me, it is much, much, much weirder and overdramatic than that.
