Review of Dinner at Eight (1933) by Jess L — 06 Feb 2013
Superb acting, screenplay and direction combining to create an unforgettable and now one of my all time favourite movies, dinner at eight. I love a movie where the character's lives intersect and haven't seen one do it so well as this film.
Set against the backdrop of the great depression; socialites attempting to hold on to the lives they once led, along with some trying to become part of that lifestyle (Jean Harlow in an amazing performance), actors beyond their prime, lovers with secret affairs.
.. this is a melting pot of interesting story lines. Considering it was made in 1934 it's still a wonderful piece of cinema; a lesson for filmmakers today that it's not only about how a movie looks.
