Review of Dick Tracy (1990) by Harry W — 05 Mar 2013
At first glimpse, I thought Dick Tracy was weird. I thought it lacked action and that the characters decked in makeup were really creepy. But as the film went on, I began to embrace it and enjoy myself more.
Dick Tracy isn't as good as I was hoping, because it lacked action and seemed a little childish to be a superhero film, but Warren Beatty not only directed the film with artistic finesse, he created the perfect tone of nostalgia with his performance as the famed comic book superhero. Al Pacino was also awesome as Big Boy and created a great blend of classic gangster and comic book gangster, and the result was awesome. I also liked Madonna as a promiscuous villain and Dustin Hoffman in a Jibber Jabber wiseguy persona.
The film's comic book style was excellent, and it maintained a colourful tone the entire time, and the makeup was simultaneously creepy and cool. I also thought the costumes were perfect, since they mixed classic gangster with colours of all kinds.
Dick Tracy could stand to use more a lot more action which is the main dissapointment, but it should definetely entertain the kids with it's colourful style and great characters.
