Review of Dick Tracy (1990) by Ian B — 13 Mar 2014
One of the most visually stunning and underrated comic book movies of all time. Warren Beatty's love letter to old school gangster movies is a ton of fun...even if there are a few bumps in the road.
The script could've used a little work and the third act is a bit of a letdown, but the all-star cast really bring this flick to life. Al Pacino (clearly having the time of his life) steals the show as Big Boy Caprice, and Beatty's surrounded him with an impressive cast of character actors.
Hell, even Madonna is tolerable in this! What stands out more than the cast is the look of the film. I don't think the term "comic book movie" applies more than it does here. This is a brilliantly colourful film that blends live-action and illustrated backgrounds perfectly.
Issues with the script and pace aside, this is a great, underrated flick that deserves a look.
