Review of Death in Venice (1971) by Peter W — 26 Jun 2007
While exuding with pedophiliac subjectivity, I'd like to think of this film as a story of lifeless, dying man who refounds a passion in life by simply admiring raw, young beauty. Solemn and poetic.
Autobiographically, this novel showed Thomas Mann's struggle with his sexuality. While the concept and style of this film is captivating, I found it tiring to watch. I didn't enjoy it but I couldn't pinpoint the reason.
A hard film to rate.
