Review of Death in Venice (1971) by Jason M — 01 Feb 2016
A masterwork from Luchino Visconti, An adaption of Thomas Mann's novel of the same name. A vacationing Gustav Mahler like character in Vebice during the plague becomes strangely attracted and than obsessed with an emotionless boy named Tadzio.
As his obsession accelerates and spirals into decay, he succumbs to the prevalent disease and we ultimately realize who the boy's true identity is, Death itself. Most viewers may not understand this by superficially watching this film.
However, there are underlying themes of high art cinema in this film and the audience needs to be more perceptive as this is not standard Hollywood fare for mass consumption.
