Review of Cutter's Way (1981) by Jonathan B — 15 Dec 2011
Almost a step back to the film making of early 70's New Hollywood, Cutter's Way is a genre film that spins itself on its head. One part film noir thriller in the vein of Chinatown and another part intense character study, Ivan Passer's film is full of great performances from Bridges and John Heard as the titular Vietnam vet trying to come to terms with life post war.
Cinematographer Jordan Cronenweth who went on to shoot Ridley Scott's Bladerunner, shoots the film in an almost etheral other worldliness. Often sited as a forgotten classic, its easy to see why this intense character piece was forgotten in the post Star Wars malaise of blockbuster cinema.
