Review of Children of Men (2006) by Catherine M — 03 Feb 2013
An intelligent film that depicts its dystopian society in a frighteningly believable way, despite having elements of science fiction and thrillers, Children of Men is at its heart a well-acted drama that happens to take place in a grim future.
The film is full of metaphors and can be interpreted as an allegory for a few different things, but it's not overly complicated and the story works fantastically without any additional interpretation.
The film is very dark in tone, but it's never completely depressing as there's always at least a sliver of hope that humanity will recover from this chaotic future. If you're looking for dark but engaging sci-fi drama, Children of Men is a great addition to the genre.
