Review of Calvaire (2005) by Gina V — 07 Jul 2011
Watched this movie yesterday on DVD and must say it was an interesting experience. There's definitely a turning point in the movie, which kind of changes the emotion of the viewer, and as such offering proof for the fact how close perhaps madness, fear, suspense and laughter border in a kindred yet unrecognized spectrum.
And yes, like so many other critics have mentioned already, this film refers clearly to classics in the genre, but that does not bother at all, merely offers a grin or faint smile because the filmmaker obviously shows his admiration for those movies in a tale that does have a bite of its own.
I also have to think of Misery some, and Southern Comfort. And even a little bit of Dr. Frankenstein :-).
