Review of Brute Force (1947) by Kris K — 19 Dec 2008
Dassin was a truly remarkable director and there is no doubt that Brute Force represents a cinematic and thematic turning point for him. Although I'm hesitant to label this "film noir" as many others have, this undoubtedly hints at the noir direction in which Dassin was heading with his later, more technically stylized and highly nuanced Rififi.
Brute Force is a great film all its own, however, from a master of tension, suspense, and focuses on otherwise marginal figures -- techniques that surely influenced Sam Fuller as well as Jacques Becker.
