Review of Brick Lane (2007) by Abeda B — 05 Apr 2008
I loved the book, but I found the movie a bit disappointing.
It was well cast and well acted but I felt it was too short so the viewer couldn't get to know the characters that well. The film jumped from Nazneen's childhood to her life in Britain after 20 years, so we didn't get to see the way she grew as a character. I believe the book is largely about the self discovery of a woman, not just a muslim woman, and due to it's length the film didn't really show this.
I think if the film had been made a lot longer - more like an epic - it would have worked better.
