Review of Brick Lane (2007) by Farrah J — 30 Aug 2008
Maybe if I had read the book I would have appreciated the story far more but beautiful cinematography and strong performances aside, I was rather disappointed by this tale. Young Bengali girl gets married off to educated man in UK, has 2 girls with him but decides she loves him only after he stands up against burgeoning extremism at a local Muslim meeting, has affair with local boy despite the whole community watching her and having kept herself to herself for 20-odd years and then ends up staying in England with two TEENAGE daughters while the daddy goes back to Bangladesh even though a man's been sniffing around his wife? Unbelievable.
Like I said, there's probably a lot of explanations in the book but these did not translate to screen so I didn't enjoy this as much as I could have.
