Review of Blood Father (2016) by K Nife C — 27 Aug 2016
It might be jarring at first to discover that everyone in this flick is so damned wry and unconcerned about their mortality. Once you know the stakes are low in their mind, you can begin to fully appreciate "Blood Father".
Mel Gibson has thankfully found another outlet for his alcohol-crazed, convict sensibilities by playing...a reformed alcoholic/convict. Imagine "Leon: The Professional" mixed with "Mad Max" and you will get a rough idea of how much fun this film is.
Tonally, it makes no sense why Gibson and Erin Moriarty are so unflinchingly amoral while having so much fun, but I guess that is that "pulp" aspect that every film critic has perfunctorily noted about the film.
There are some great action set-pieces and lots of unnecessary cursing, and the so-cal desert is just beautiful. Hopefully, Gibson will abandon his "epic" directorial efforts and focus on being the beautiful action-man that America (except for the Jews) wants.
