Review of Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) by Matthew F. J — 11 Feb 2015
I heard about this film, and for a long time tried to find it. Imagine my surprise when I saw it popping on my Netflix! The trailer was enigmatic, obscure and fascinating so I didn't even hesitated a second before watching it, thinking that once again I had found another gem of beauty bathed in epic madness and maybe reaching the level of a Jodorowski film.
Well let me tell you straight away, Beyond the Black Rainbow is not a great film. It's an interesting film for many reasons but it's not great. First of all the colors, atmosphere and sound design are absolutely awesome.
For whoever out there is in search of a new sensorial experience, you will embark on a journey of pure visual madness bathed in a soundtrack straight out of a trippy/ psychedelic mind. Now the story unfortunately is too dull, slow and opaque to fully make sense and the dialogues are not helping making any sense.
Even though the film isn't great and sometimes look like a student film, it has a certain appeal and unique vibe. It will be for you to decide whether you enjoyed the ride or not. Personally I was both fascinated and bored but do not regret watching the film at all.
On the contrary I wish to see Panos Costamos direct another film as soon as possible because the young man has a talent that deserves to be explored and followed.
