Review of Annihilation (2018) by Davrosdaleks1 — 02 Mar 2018
I was really surprised by Annihilation. It's a sci-fi/horror/thriller. It's equally weird, intriguing, and unsettling. Basically, what Prometheus should have been.
One of the most visually unique films I've seen. There is so much memorable imagery, beautiful, creepy, and sometimes both at once. The whole film has a unique style that I dig. The lightning has a sunsetsey 70's feel to it. Rather than a traditional score, a good portion of the music goes for a folksy style, which actually meshes very well with the swampland the characters are trekking through.
I've heard complaints that the film is too slow. Personally, it went fine with me. I don't think there were any scenes they could've cut. However, some of the dialogue does slow things down sometimes. It's very deliberate and intellectual -ish and doesn't always sound natural. Though this mostly occurs in the opening chapter where all the exposition comes from. (Jennifer Jason Leigh's character is especially a bit of a boring chore to get through in beginning. Can't tell if it's the dialogue, her acting, or a bit of both.
