Review of Annihilation (2018) by Hanna N — 10 Jan 2019
Hypnotic and elusive, this horror/sci-fi hybrid is unlike anything you will have seen. An investigation into the nature of an apparent alien invasion, it also suggests that destruction can be beautiful and organic, and even necessary.
It's anchored by a very good central performance by Natalie Portman, a marvellous sound score that borrows from Ligeti, and unusual production design. Borderline pretentious on occasion, but far more successful than its cinematic cousin Arrival.
