Review of Annihilation (2018) by Rafael M — 19 Jan 2019
Wow. I was actually quite impressed with this movie especially with the ending. If you're looking for a movie that is completely logical and makes perfect sense then this movie doesn't qualify, but I felt that this somewhat rambling, yet visually stunning and dramatic cinema is a masterpiece in its own unique way.
It was became genuinely frightening as the movie progressed, and like I said, the ending did not disappoint. [spoiler alert] the encounter at the end where the alien mirrors the protagonist was a several-minutes-long downright unsettling scene and it felt like something I had never seen before in any movie so this movie really gets points for originality.
Part of the movie has a campy '80s terror flick feel, but then other parts have a slick and well-produced feel to go along with gorgeous cinematography. This isn't a feel good movie, or a movie that seems to posit a deep message or anything like that.
This is a wild ride of a movie that will suck you in for the most part and leave you with a deeply unsettling feeling.
