Review of An American Werewolf in London (1981) by Chris D — 14 Jul 2010
A very well made horror-comedy with the best werewolf transformation scene I've ever seen, as well as some really interesting nightmare sequences. The film certainly takes it time getting to the "werewolf terrorizing" sequence, but it's filled with some interesting romance between the werewolf and a nurse who took care of him after he was attacked (and his friend killed).
I thought the undead Jack was pretty funny, and gruesome, a unusual visualization of a friend coming back from the dead: no translucent angel here! The movie is pretty flippant with the romance, however, and the ending clearly gives the impression that it was honestly just a time filler, to give Naughton's werewolf someone to sympathize with his inevitable demise.
The film's cinematography and make-up is far more incredible than the story, but I enjoyed it even without being a horror fan.
