Review of Alphaville (1965) by Roberto H — 19 Nov 2005
Alphaville is Jean-Luc Godard's vision of a dystopian near-future, where everything is codified and catalogued, and logic is the dominant ideology. Citizens are controlled by a super computer called Alpha 60 (the major influence on Kubrick's HAL 9000, and indeed, Alphaville invites comparison with 2001), and it is Alpha's efforts to make Eddie Constantine's outsider secret agent, Lemmy Caution, to conform that forms the basis of the narrative.
The gorgeous Anna Karina co-stars, as Natasha, a citizen of Alphaville, and the source of Lemmy Caution's faith in humanity. Shot on a small budget this film, parodies elements of pulp cultire: Guns, girls, mysoginy and genre conventions.
A must see.
