Review of All That Heaven Allows (1955) by Glenn H — 09 Jul 2010
After seeing "Far From Heaven", we decided to see the original 1955 movie that inspired it. Great, quintessential (or so I am told) example of film melodrama.
More than a mere romantic soap opera, it is a commentary on the conformity and mindlessness that characterized the time period. It deals with the socially unacceptable (in 1955) themes of the older woman, younger man, the shallowness, insipidity, and snobbery of the upper middle class, masking their basic insecurity, unhappiness, and self-loathing, and a male lead who doesn't care about acceptance by anyone, who doesn't care about money or success, who just wants to be happy and do his own thing.
Love seeing these sort of movies that peel back the facade and show that all was not Ozzie and Harriet.
