Review of A Quiet Place (2016) by Kyle L — 15 Jul 2018
Terrifying, creative and wickedly smart. A Quiet Place is an example of a Horror film that works its way around the corner by being able to create a playful, terrifying movie while telling an original story.
The plot of this film revolves around a family who are one of the only survivors left on the planet after humanity has been wiped out by a group of creatures who hunt and kill their victims through sound.
Over the course of the days, the family tries to find ways to survive and are also looking for the weaknesses of these creatures as they bond together at the same time. 2018 is a bit of a hit and miss for Horror films this year, while a few movies like the fourth Insidious movie or Winchester are beyond average.
A Quiet Place and Hereditary are the only good Horror movies to date, with the latter being inferior to this film for all the right reasons. The major difference between A Quiet Place and the aforementioned Hereditary is that both have different executions; one is able to work because of its playful and creative ideas.
The other tries too hard to be good but skids off the rails quickly in the end, nevertheless is still able to terrify and entertain Horror fans during its final moments. A Quiet Place is a whole new level of Horror in my honest opinion and it is one of the best films to come up with the most original concept in the genre since The Conjuring franchise.
What made this movie different to other Horror films is that it does not rely on jump scares like how other movies are doing today, I'm not saying that Horror has lost its magic because of that but what I'm saying is that most studios should come up with something that does not feel repetitive if they keep using the same formula over and over again.
A Quiet Place and Hereditary are the true examples of Horror films that are different for all the right reasons. This movie has done a fantastic job in building up the suspense because A Quiet Place manages to be pure in its creativeness at the soul of its execution.
There are so many scenes that are terrifying and suspenceful (The opening scene with one of the youngest kids getting killed, first time we see the monster on screen, the heart stopping bathroom sequence where Emily Blunt's character is about to give birth before she can scream, the terrifying grain silo sequence, the intense cornfield scene, the terrifying sound proof room scene and the finale where the family fights one of the creatures).
The soundtrack sets the mood in the best way for emotion and tension. Last but not least, the film's true highlight is the use of silence. The movie using sign language from start to finish adds up the suspense and doubles the fun, there are only a few scenes where dialogue is active and those are scenes where the creatures can't hear them like if they are talking in a place where the creatures could barely hear them whether its near the loud waterfall or in the aforementioned soundproof room as this is pure cinematic genius in the Horror genre.
The acting is great here, although I am not familiar with the child actors, the performances of Emily Blunt and John Krasinski are great here and its cute to see them work together especially when Emily Blunt's husband is behind the camera since he is credited as the director of this film.
Actor and Director John Krasinski has done a spectacular job with his work on this film, he really did a fantastic job here as he shows his proof of being able to not only act but is also able to make good movies, especially in the Horror genre in general.
I look forward to the future of these two in their careers together. Overall, A Quiet Place is a terrifying film that is playful in crafting suspense while also being able to balance on its own in telling a fantastic story that is pure in originality and creativeness at the sake of its own heart and soul.
This film gets an 11/10.
